Deforestation in Aceh

1. Overview
Deforestation is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing the province of Aceh in recent decades. Although Aceh still has relatively extensive forest cover compared to other regions in Sumatra, pressure on the forests continues to increase due to various human activities.
Most of Aceh’s forest areas are located within the Leuser Ecosystem, one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots. Therefore, deforestation in Aceh not only has local impacts but also global implications for biodiversity and climate change.
2. Deforestation Trends
Forest monitoring data indicate that Aceh has experienced significant forest cover loss over the past two decades. Between approximately 2003 and 2023, Aceh is estimated to have lost more than 300,000 hectares of forest due to various factors.
This deforestation has occurred in various districts, with some areas recording relatively high rates of deforestation in recent years, particularly in regions with road access, potential for plantations, or land-based economic activities.
3. The Main Causes of Deforestation
Some of the main factors driving deforestation in Aceh include:
Plantation expansion, particularly oil palm plantations
Land clearing for agriculture and housing
Illegal logging
Infrastructure development, such as roads that provide access to forested areas
Mining and other extractive activities
In addition to human factors, pressure on forests can also be exacerbated by hydrometeorological disasters, which are occurring with increasing frequency due to climate change.
4. The Impact of Deforestation
Deforestation has a variety of serious impacts on the environment and society, including:
The loss of habitats for wildlife such as orangutans, tigers, and elephants.
Increased risk of flooding and landslides due to reduced forest cover
The decline in the quality and availability of water sources
Carbon emissions that accelerate climate change
Increasing conflicts between humans and wildlife
5. Efforts to Control Deforestation
To reduce the rate of deforestation, various efforts have been undertaken by the government, conservation organizations, and civil society. Some of the key strategies include:
Strengthening the protection of forest areas and national parks
Forest patrols and deforestation monitoring using satellite technology and drones
Law enforcement against illegal activities in forest areas
Development of alternative livelihoods for communities living near forests
Campaigns and policy advocacy for the protection of forest landscapes
6. The Importance of Protecting Aceh’s Forests
Controlling deforestation in Aceh is crucial for maintaining the sustainability of tropical forest ecosystems, which serve as the foundation of local communities’ livelihoods and provide habitats for various rare species worldwide. Forest protection efforts are not only about nature conservation but also about economic sustainability, climate resilience, and the future well-being of communities.
