Sumber Makmur Village Officially Enacts Wildlife Protection Law in 2026

Aceh Tamiang – The Government of Sumber Makmur Village, Tenggulun District, Aceh Tamiang Regency, officially stipulated Qanun of Sumber Makmur Village Number 001 of 2026 concerning Wildlife Protection on Friday, May 15, 2026.

The drafting of this Qanun was initiated by the community and the Sumber Makmur Village Government, along with the Cendana Group, as an effort to strengthen wildlife and environmental protection at the village level. During the drafting process, the HAkA Foundation facilitated a series of community discussions and deliberations that have been ongoing since February 2026, starting with identifying environmental issues in the village and developing wildlife protection regulations that were mutually agreed upon by the community.

The determination and signing of the Qanun was held at the Datok Penghulu Office of Sumber Makmur Village and was attended by elements of the village government, the Village Sitting Council (MDSK), community leaders, the Cendana Group, and other related parties.

Datok Penghulu Kampung Sumber Makmur said that the existence of this Qanun is expected to be a common guideline for the community in protecting the environment, especially in activities that have the potential to damage river ecosystems such as the use of strooms or electricity to catch fish.

“With this Qanun, we hope the public will have clear guidelines for protecting wildlife and the environment. This includes the use of electricity in river areas, which can damage aquatic ecosystems and threaten the sustainability of river biota. We hope this ecosystem will be maintained and utilized sustainably by the community,” he said.

The Village Qanun on Wildlife Protection contains a number of important provisions, including the role of the community in wildlife protection, the prohibition of hunting and trade of wildlife, and the provision of customary sanctions for violations that occur in the village area.

Furthermore, the Qanun is expected to strengthen community cooperation in protecting the environment and foster collective awareness of the importance of wildlife conservation in the surrounding village areas. The Qanun was drafted through a community deliberation process, demonstrating active citizen participation in village-level policymaking. This Qanun was also drafted in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, including Law Number 32 of 2024 concerning Amendments to Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning the Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems.

HAkA Foundation representative, Munira Rezkina, expressed her appreciation to the people of Sumber Makmur Village for their initiative and commitment in drafting wildlife protection regulations at the village level. “This Qanun not only talks about wildlife protection, but also how to protect their habitat and build public awareness so that humans and animals can coexist safely. Hopefully this Qanun can be implemented well and become an example for other villages in strengthening wildlife protection,” he said.

He also expressed his appreciation to the residents of Sumber Makmur Village, who were seen as having demonstrated progressive steps in strengthening community-based environmental protection at the village level.
