Training to Improve Forest Monitoring Skills for the CPT Team of HAkA’s Partner Village

Since 2018, the HAkA Foundation has been promoting community-managed areas through social forestry, particularly the Village Forest scheme. Of the 12 villages in the intervention area that have been supported, four have secured management rights for a period of 35 years. Community organizing is the approach applied by the team to build a foundation of forest defenders through on-the-ground work, particularly in protecting the Leuser Ecosystem Area (KEL). Strengthening the protective function of forest areas is a core action for other LPHK initiatives. The HAkA Foundation continues to develop various organizing strategies, including the establishment of Community Patrol Teams (CPTs) open to both men and women.

Every village forest under HAkA’s guidance will implement Community-Based Patrols, following capacity-building efforts for the CPT teams. In 2022, for the first time, HAkA announced to the world that women are also part of the Leuser defenders, joining the newly formed CPT Damaran, followed by CPT Bunin in the same year. Then, in the following year, CPT Cendana, CPT Mendale, CPT Linge, and CPT Lhok Batee Intan were formed.

Sharpening skills and strengthening knowledge of biodiversity is essential. Conducting forest monitoring and skills enhancement training demonstrates the HAkA Foundation’s commitment to strengthening the 86 members of 15 CPT teams spread across the districts of Aceh Tamiang, East Aceh, Central Aceh, and Southwest Aceh. This capacity-building initiative will bring together stakeholders and experts in their respective fields. The training was held on April 6–8, 2026
