Biodiversity in Aceh

1. Overview
Aceh is one of the regions with the highest biodiversity in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. About 55% of Aceh’s territory remains forested, encompassing lowland tropical rainforests, montane forests, peat swamps, and coastal ecosystems. These conditions make Aceh a habitat for thousands of plant and wildlife species, many of which are endemic to Sumatra and endangered.
Aceh’s biodiversity hotspot is located in the Leuser Ecosystem, a landscape spanning approximately 2.6 million hectares that is globally recognized as one of the world’s most important tropical forest areas.
2. Flora Diversity
Aceh’s forests boast an exceptionally high diversity of flora, with thousands of plant species forming the complex ecosystem of a tropical forest.
Some of the major groups of flora include:
Dipterocarp trees that dominate lowland rainforests.
A variety of traditional medicinal plants used by the local community.
Rare species such as the Rafflesia and the Amorphophallus titanum (giant corpse flower).
Various types of tropical forest orchids and epiphytes.
This flora is not only important for the ecosystem, but also plays a role in carbon sequestration, water cycle regulation, and soil stability.
3. Richness of Fauna
Aceh is home to many important wildlife species, including some of the rarest in the world.
Key species found in this area include:
Sumatran orangutan
Sumatran tiger
Sumatran elephant
Sumatran rhinoceros
These four species are often referred to as Sumatra’s keystone megafauna, and their presence underscores the importance of Aceh as a last refuge for endangered wildlife.
In addition, the forests of Aceh are also home to:
Hundreds of bird species, including hornbills and kingfishers
Various primates, such as siamangs and gibbons
Small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and thousands of insect species
4. Global Ecological Value
Aceh’s biodiversity is of great importance to the world because:
One of the last relatively intact tropical rainforests in Sumatra
A habitat for many species found nowhere else
Playing a major role in climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration
Protecting water sources for millions of people in Aceh and North Sumatra
5. Threats to Biodiversity
Although still rich in biodiversity, Aceh’s forests face various pressures, including:
Deforestation caused by plantation expansion and road construction
Illegal wildlife hunting and trade
Pertambangan dan pembukaan lahan
Hydrometeorological disasters that are occurring with increasing frequency due to climate change
6. The Importance of Conservation Efforts
Conservation efforts in Aceh involve various stakeholders, including the government, civil society organizations, research institutions, and local communities. The strategies implemented include:
Protection of forest areas and wildlife habitats
Law enforcement against wildlife trafficking
Forest restoration and ecosystem rehabilitation
Community empowerment through a sustainable economy
Protecting Aceh’s biodiversity means preserving ecosystem balance, climate resilience, and the sustainability of communities that depend on the forest.
