Activities in Aceh Tamiang January 10-15, 2026 – The Aceh Forest, Nature, and Environment Foundation (HAkA) in collaboration with the Aceh Education Office held an intensive cleanup action in five schools affected by flash floods in Aceh Tamiang Regency. This activity was carried out at the State Special School for Development of Aceh Tamiang, SMAN 1 Vocational School for Muda, SMKN 1 Karang Baru, SMKN 2 Karang Baru, and SMAN 1 Bandar Pusaka.

This mutual cooperation effort involved a team of volunteers from the HAkA Foundation, working with teachers, parents, students participating in the Community Service Program (KKN) at Syiah Kuala University, and students from Ar-Raniry State Islamic University. The volunteers cleared thick mud from classrooms and the staff room, while also cleaning the remaining school facilities so that teaching and learning could resume soon.

The flash floods and landslides that occurred in late November 2025 affected thousands of schools in Aceh. The resulting thick mud hampered the educational activities of thousands of students, including those with disabilities at the Pembina Aceh Tamiang State Special Needs School. In response, the HAkA Foundation initiated this mutual assistance program as part of its collaborative support for education recovery with the local government.

Volunteers were divided into teams based on the target schools. Using shovels, hoes, and buckets, they cleaned up the mud that had accumulated on the floors, desks, and walls of classrooms and the teachers’ lounge at SMAN 1 Kejuruan Muda, SMKN 1 and SMKN 2 Karang Baru, SMAN 1 Bandar Pusaka, and SLB Negeri Pembina Aceh Tamiang. The involvement of parents and KKN students enabled the cleanup process to be more thorough and expedited. The activity continued with a symbolic handover of aid to the schools.

In addition to the cleanup activities, the HAkA Foundation also distributed aid in the form of dispensers, drinking water gallons, drinking bottles, student socks, and cleaning supplies such as soap and mops. This assistance is intended to support the school’s short- and long-term operational needs.

The distribution of dispensers, clean water gallons, and drinking bottles was carried out to ensure access to adequate, hygienic, and safe drinking water for students and teachers in the aftermath of the disaster, while also reducing reliance on single-use bottled water. This effort also forms part of the HAkA Foundation’s commitment to promoting plastic waste reduction and fostering environmentally friendly behaviors in schools.

“We hope this cleanup and aid distribution will accelerate the recovery of teaching and learning in flood-affected schools, particularly in Aceh Tamiang,” said Raja Mulkan, Campaigner for the HAkA Foundation. He also emphasized the importance of cross-stakeholder collaboration to build better and more sustainable environmental education in the future.
