Gayo culture refers to the cultural heritage of the Gayo people, an ethnic group inhabiting the mountainous region of Aceh Province. The Gayo people possess a rich and diverse culture, encompassing various aspects of daily life, including traditions, arts, and customs passed down from generation to generation. Some prominent aspects of Gayo culture include customs. The Gayo people have a strong system of customs that governs various aspects of life, including weddings and other traditional ceremonies. Furthermore, Gayo culture is also displayed in a wide variety of traditional arts, including dance, music, visual arts, literature, and oral arts, such as pepongoten or melengkan, among others. One example of a popular traditional Gayo dance is didong, often performed at various traditional weddings, circumcisions, and other ceremonies. Not only limited to customs and arts, Gayo culture is also embedded in the architecture of its traditional buildings which are built using natural materials with distinctive designs and functions in accordance with the characteristics of the local community, as well as culinary dishes with distinctive spices and processing that are different from other regions.

When discussing culture, the Gayo people are inextricably linked to its long history, a part of Aceh’s rich history, namely the Linge Kingdom. The Linge Kingdom, a kingdom that once existed in the Gayo mountains, is estimated to have existed in the 16th century AD. It left behind numerous stories for generations through oral tradition and storytelling. The values and uniqueness of Gayo culture are an important part of Indonesia’s cultural diversity. Various factors such as modernization, globalization, and social change have threatened the continuity and sustainability of the Linge people’s culture. Therefore, there needs to be an initiative by the community to remember the past and embrace the future of civilization to preserve the cultural heritage of the Linge people.

Not limited to its rich history, Linge also has a wealth of natural resources that are passed down to future generations. The expanse of land provides a place for shelter, socializing, farming, and activities. The availability of clean water sources is an essential need for every life in the area, from the need for drinking, cooking, washing, to irrigating rice fields through irrigation. The Linge Community Cultural Festival is a form of appreciation that has been carried out by the Linge community in maintaining the existence of its culture as well as a form of appreciation for the struggle of the Linge community in efforts to preserve the sustainable environment. This event is expected to be a platform for local communities to celebrate their cultural heritage while supporting environmental conservation efforts through social forestry.
