Devastating cyclonic floods hit Aceh and other areas of Sumatra on 26 November 2025. Vast areas have been inundated, major bridges and roads collapsed and thousands of people are impacted.
Tropical Cyclone Senyar was a rare and deadly tropical cyclone that struck Peninsular Malaysia, Southern Thailand, and Sumatra, Indonesia in November 2025.
Accumulated deforestation in Aceh over the past 30 years has reached over 700,000 hectares. This ongoing deforestation has significantly increased the frequency of flooding in Aceh.
The HAkA team was working in the field around the Leuser Ecosystem when Tropical Cyclone Senyar approached Aceh. Some were organizing the Nenggeri Linge Festival in Linge, Central Aceh. Some of the team were also gathering input from the field regarding the development of the Leuser Ecosystem's ecotourism master plan.
After extreme rains hit central and eastern Aceh, their force destroyed roads and bridges. Many roads collapsed, flooding occurred, hillsides collapsed, and bridges were cut off. The HAkA team continued its struggle to reach rescue workers from the isolated area. The HAkA secretary and several other stranded team members walked tens of kilometers to Takengon to seek assistance and evacuate.
